Vitis BB
Development of a climatically adapted range of vines for Brandenburg
Viticulture in Brandenburg has a long tradition. Wine was cultivated and pressed in many parts of the state from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. The grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.), originally from the Mediterranean region, was cultivated here by settlers from the West during the colonisation of the East.
The current wine-growing area in Brandenburg covers around 33 hectares, some of which are professionalised. There is still room for expansion. The Vitis BB project aims to establish a climate-tolerant and modern range of grape varieties in Brandenburg. In this project, the focus is on analysing modern PiWi vines for their drought and frost tolerance. The term ‘PiWi’ stands for fungus-resistant grape varieties with strong resistance to powdery and downy mildew.
Historical Vitis vinifera varieties are also to be tested for their resistance to fungal diseases. In this way, both traditional and innovative approaches to viticulture can be integrated. These studies are of crucial importance to ensure the long-term success of viticulture in the region and at the same time to meet the challenges of climate change. The Vitis BB project is managed by the Humboldt University of Berlin, Department of Urban Plant Ecophysiology.
