Algae and other raw materials, analysis and development
We offer our customers selected vegetable raw materials for their development. Micro and macro algae, such as Spirulina, Chlorella, Schizochytrium, Scendesmus, Nannochloropsis, Dunaliella and others as powder, fresh biomass and live biomass (suspensions). Algae have important nutrients and bioactive effects.
We would be happy to share our experience in the use and application of:
- Healthy minor grains such as emmer wheat, einkorn wheat, spelt
- Special malts
- Herbal active ingredient complexes
- By-products from agriculture and the food industry
We can assist in the procurement and characterization of vegetable and animal raw materials and products with regard to protein, starch or glycogen, cellulose, hemicellulose and fat content.
The ILU has extensive expertise in the analysis of food and environmental samples. We have various wet-chemical, spectroscopic and chromatographic methods (GC, HPLC, HPTLC, NIR) at our disposal. With our high-quality laboratory equipment, our scientists can also adapt and develop methods for individual analyses.
In addition to the classic parameters such as the content of total nitrogen, proteins, fat and carbohydrates as well as water in biomass, individual amino acids, fatty acids and sugars can also be analysed. In addition to the main compounds, several methods for the determination of minor compounds have been established at the ILU. These include, among others
phenolic compounds (polyphenols),
carotenoids, terpenes (essential oils),
tocopherols (vitamin E),
ascorbic acid (vitamin C),
volatile compounds (such as flavouring substances, lipid degradation products) and
sugar degradation products (such as HMF, furfural).
Furthermore, the ILU can determine concentrations of sugars, organic acids and phosphate as well as ammonium, free amino nitrogen and total nitrogen in liquid media such as fermentation and culture broths. In addition to the compounds listed above, the total content of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant capacity can also be determined in biomass extracts.
You can take advantage of our expertise in product development in the areas of food, nutritional supplements, cosmetics, animal feed and bio-based chemicals.
We can partner with you in the development of processes for the cultivation of phototrophic and heterotrophic microalgae as well as for the biotechnological recycling of residues.
Together, we can create concepts for the efficient and substantial use of organic residues and waste. Based on the biochemical composition of residual and waste materials, we at ILU, use biotechnological processes for recycling; and would be happy to implement this with you as part of preliminary investigations.
