Development of new forms of vaccine application to improve fish infection prophylaxis against redmouth disease and furunculosis in salmonids

In fish farming and fish production, in addition to viral infectious diseases, redmouth disease and furunculosis are particularly destructive infectious diseases for salmonids. In the scope of this joint project of ILU e.V., Ripack Labor GmbH and the Inland Fisheries Institute innovative, stock-specific vaccines against these bacterial diseases are to be developed and manufactured, with the goal of improving fish infection prevention. This should reduce cases of illness and, thereby, losses in fish production, whilst at the same time minimising the use of antibiotics in aquaculture, which is ultimately the prerequisite for the production of healthy foods. The focus of the project is, on the one hand, on the simplest possible form of application (immersion baths, oral administration) and on the other hand, on the optimal composition of the vaccine (long-lasting vaccine protection, identification of all relevant pathogenic biotypes and serotypes). The goal of the project is to achieve the highest possible level of acceptance for the use of the new vaccine among fish farmers.
