Landwirtschaft im Dialog (LiD) – A fruitful cooperation in Brandenburg
Plot day on 11 June 2025
Niche crops can open up new market potential, spread risks and reduce dependence on the world market. Farmers who get involved in this area start out as pioneers and open up a new market over the years. The information day on the demo plots, or plot day for short, always showcases many niche crops. This year, too, there are some less common plants in the plots: Buckwheat, camelina, millet and peanuts, for example. – Maxie Grüter, Member of the Board at the Institute for Food and Environmental Research e.V. (ILU)
The Plot Day was conceived and developed for the fifth time by Landwirtschaft im Dialog (LiD). This cooperation between the coordination centre at the Institute for Food and Environmental Research (ILU) and the Brandenburg State Farmers’ Association (LBV) organises the event every year on the grounds of the Märkisches Ausstellungs- und Freizeitzentrum (MAFZ) Erlebnispark Paaren.
What can you discover here? Research institutions, companies and producers use demonstration plots to show the potential of ‘niche crops’ for Brandenburg. Everything that makes up agriculture takes place in one place. On around 20 plots, niche crops and new varieties of proven crops grown on an original sand-dominated Brandenburg site under natural conditions can be examined. Companies processing these crops are located directly opposite the plots. This allows farmers to quickly exchange ideas with customers, sound out the wishes of processors and share their own ideas. Additional insights are provided by researchers from various institutes, who provide the latest expertise on rye & other crops.
The plots were created in collaboration with the Coordination Centre for Research-based Experimentation at the Institute for Food and Environmental Research (ILU) and the Berge Experimental Station of the Institute for Agricultural and Urban Ecological Projects (IASP). Crops were selected that can enrich your cultivation planning due to better site adaptation, drought tolerance and new marketing potential.
