With around 300 participants from research and industry, the 1st Insects Plus International Congress took place in Cloppenburg from May 12 to 14, 2025, establishing itself as the leading platform for the alternative protein sector. The congress brought together global producers and suppliers of alternative proteins, dynamic start-ups, providers of state-of-the-art processing technologies, and renowned scientists.
In addition to insects, the event also focused on other alternative protein sources such as algae, fungi, and legumes. Particular emphasis was placed on the growing importance of insect farming. Alongside technical innovations, questions regarding animal welfare, utilization, and relevant ethical issues were also discussed.
A highlight for the Institute of Food and Environmental Research (ILU) was the participation of Prof. Dr. Daniel Pleissner in a high-profile panel discussion on the topic of alternative proteins. Pleissner is convinced that alternative proteins will play a major role in nutrition in the future: “Proteins from microalgae and mushrooms in particular can already be produced and have the potential to replace animal protein. And without additives.” But there is still some way to go, the ILU chairman qualified: “The production of these proteins is still only possible on a rather small scale, or is still part of research projects. And finally, these new protein products still need to be explained to consumers.” In general, however, the willingness to buy alternative proteins is high, according to Pleissner.
The event once again demonstrated: Alternative proteins are at the center of current research and public discourse, playing a key role in sustainably meeting future nutritional needs.
