Community of practice-oriented agricultural research institutions in Brandenburg

The community of practice-oriented agricultural research institutions comprises eight institutions in Brandenburg. They stands for sustainable solutions in landscapes, arable farming and horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries and beekeeping as well as consumer protection. All organisations are registered associations based in Brandenburg and receive institutional funding from the Brandenburg Ministry of Agriculture. They research, investigate, train and fulfil tasks for Brandenburg and beyond. The spectrum ranges from beekeeping, inland fishing, animal breeding and husbandry, dairy and food industry to environmentally friendly land use and mining rehabilitation.

For over 30 years, the multi-country institutions have proved to be an important complement and partner to universities and colleges as well as scientific institutions funded by the federal and state governments. They are characterised by professional expertise, a high degree of flexibility and good networking in science and cooperation with practice.

The community of agricultural research institutions in Brandenburg consists of:

  • Research Institute for Post-Mining Landscapes e.V. Finsterwalde (FIB)
  • Potsdam Institute for Inland Fisheries (IFB)
  • Institut für Fortpflanzung landwirtschaftlicher Nutztiere (IFN) Schönow e.V. (IFN)
  • Institute for Food and Environmental Research e.V. (ILU) Bad Belzig
  • Institute for Bee Research Hohen Neuendorf e.V. (LIB)
  • Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Gartenbau und Arboristik e.V. Großbeeren (LVGA)
  • Teaching and Research Station for Animal Breeding and Husbandry e.V. Groß Kreutz (LVAT)
  • Milchwirtschaftlichen Lehr- und Untersuchungsanstalt Oranienburg e.V. (MLUA)

A short presentation of the community

Research Institute for Post-Mining Landscapes e.V. Finsterwalde (FIB)

The Research Institute for Post-Mining Landscapes (FIB) in Finsterwalde was founded in 1992. It deals with landscapes damaged by raw material extraction, particularly in the Lusatian lignite mining area. To this end, the FIB develops remediation solutions with a focus on agricultural and forestry recultivation, aquatic ecology, landscape development and nature conservation.

Potsdam Institute of Inland Fisheries (IfB)

The Potsdam Institute of Inland Fisheries (IfB) is a scientific institution conducting applied research into fisheries and fish ecology in inland waters. The institute sees its research as serving the interests of sustainable and successful commercial and recreational fishing, including aquaculture.

The researchers contribute to ensuring that fish caught and produced in domestic inland waters are available under defined conditions. Preserving genetic diversity, fish health and species-appropriate husbandry are therefore also among the areas of research. Climate change and its impact on fish fauna and its use and management are also topics of interest.

Institut für Fortpflanzung landwirtschaftlicher Nutztiere Schönow e.V. (IFN)

The Institut für Fortpflanzung landwirtschaftlicher Nutztiere Schönow e.V. (IFN) is a non-profit educational and research institution in the field of animal breeding and livestock research. The further development of biotechnology in animal breeding, the preservation of biodiversity, sustainable agricultural production and the minimisation of antibiotics in agriculture are important research goals. In addition, the institute, based in Bernau near Berlin, is a state-recognised training centre and organises further training events for farmers and veterinarians

Institute for Food and Environmental Research (ILU)

The Institute for Food and Environmental Research (ILU) is a non-profit research institution with more than 30 years of expertise in the fields of food processing, environmental research and biotechnology. The institute was founded in 1991 and focuses on scientific and technology-oriented research. It is always important that the research delivers results that lead to concrete products and result in actions and processes that protect and improve the environment and food. That is why the ILU not only works with public clients, but also cooperates explicitly with companies in the private sector. This guarantees a practical and down-to-earth approach.

State Institute for Apiculture Hohen Neuendorf e.V. (LIB)

The State Institute for Apiculture Hohen Neuendorf e.V. (LIB) is a research institution jointly supported by Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Thuringia and Berlin. It conducts practice-oriented research on bee biology, focusing on:

  • Breeding and behaviour
  • Molecular microbiology and bee diseases
  • Honey analysis and pollination

The institute is also active in the training and further education of beekeepers and interested members of the public, as well as in practical beekeeping

Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Gartenbau und Arboristik e.V. Großbeeren (LVGA)

The Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Gartenbau und Arboristik e.V. Großbeeren (LVGA) in Großbeeren is a certified educational centre located just outside Berlin and an important partner for training and further education in the green sector. Every year, more than 1,500 participants attend LVGA courses and seminars as part of inter-company training. At the same time, there are 1,100 specialists and managers in further education and training, as well as 600 trade visitors in the fields of gardening and landscaping, production horticulture in all disciplines, and arboriculture/tree care.
As a partner for companies, they are networked throughout Germany and are a long-standing member of the Deula Federal Association.

At the two locations in Großbeeren and Müncheberg, practical experimentation and teaching go hand in hand, so that the latest findings from plant cultivation research are continuously integrated into teaching. Dealing with the consequences of climate change is a particular focus.

Teaching and Research Institute for Animal Breeding and Husbandry (LVAT) in Groß Kreutz

The Teaching and Research Institute for Animal Breeding and Husbandry (LVAT) in Groß Kreutz is the most important research base in the field of animal husbandry in the state of Brandenburg. It conducts performance tests on slaughter and fattening performance in cattle, pigs and sheep. The institute also carries out practical trials for the State Office for Consumer Protection, Agriculture and Land Consolidation (LELF), universities and other research partners.

The LVAT cultivates 530 hectares of arable land, plus 370 hectares of extensive and intensive grassland, primarily to feed the animals. As part of its projects, the LVAT uses part of the land for trials and demonstrations. Such projects deal with digitalisation and automation in crop production, biodiversity issues, alternative crops and the optimisation of fodder production, but also with various landscape elements. However, no trial areas are set aside specifically for this purpose.
