From June 10th to 12th, 2025, the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP), in collaboration with Norwegian partners and the UNEP uPcycle project, held an international workshop on “Nutrient Management in Aquaculture Feed, Seafood Processing, and Fish Sludge Valorisation.” The event was held in Bergen, Norway, and online, focusing on nutrient flows, environmental best practices, phosphorus recycling, and regulatory challenges in aquaculture.

Participants included representatives from the European Commission (DG MARE and DG SANTE), major aquaculture industry players (fish farmers, feed suppliers), prominent R&D initiatives and networks, as well as UNEP and Norwegian authorities. The aim of the workshop was to contribute to the UNEP uPcycle project, resulting in a UNEP white paper on phosphorus sustainability in aquaculture.

During the workshop, Prof. Dr. Daniel Pleissner presented the Climaqua and Cipromed projects. He demonstrated how microalgae can be used to efficiently recover phosphorus from aquaculture side streams. This innovative approach helped to close nutrient cycles and promoted sustainable development in aquaculture.
