The congress brought together global producers and suppliers of alternative proteins, dynamic start-ups, providers of state-of-the-art processing technologies, and renowned scientists.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to insects, the event also focused on other alternative protein sources such as algae, fungi, and legumes. Particular emphasis was placed on the growing importance of insect farming. Alongside technical innovations, questions regarding animal welfare, utilization, and relevant ethical issues were also discussed.<\/p>\n<p>A highlight for the Institute of Food and Environmental Research (ILU) was the participation of Prof. Dr. Daniel Pleissner in a high-profile panel discussion on the topic of alternative proteins. Pleissner is convinced that alternative proteins will play a major role in nutrition in the future: \u201cProteins from microalgae and mushrooms in particular can already be produced and have the potential to replace animal protein. And without additives.\u201d But there is still some way to go, the ILU chairman qualified: \u201cThe production of these proteins is still only possible on a rather small scale, or is still part of research projects.
